What is Reiki and Where Does It Come From?

What is Reiki -

Reiki is an ancient healing modality that originated in the orient, possibly Tibet since many of its symbols are found in Tibetan Sanskrit texts. The word we use, Reiki(pronounced Ray-Key), is made up of 2 Japanese words; "Rei" meaning supernatural force or spiritual intelligence and "Ki" meaning life energy. Thus Reiki is "spiritually guided life force energy"

Reiki is an amazing channeled energy, that comes from the highest spiritual source. Because Reiki energy comes from this source, it can never be exhausted nor depleted.

Being spiritually directed, Reiki works only for the "HIGHEST GOOD" of each person. Reiki is both a powerful and a gentle energy, a natural alternative for balancing the body's energy to promote health and well-being.  Reiki is multi-dimensional, working on the cause of a problem at whatever level it may exist - body, mind, or spirit.

Just as we "know" light and sound waves are separate forms of energy, so too is Reiki. It is an additional "spectrum" of universal energy, available for all to use: a preventative for healthy people, or an aid to returning the body to a healthy state.

Where Does Reiki Come From?

Our understanding of present day Reiki is that these techniques were "re-discovered" in Japan, in about 1921,  by a man named Mikao Usui(pictured above). He had a very spiritual experience in which the meaning of life was made clear to him, then started a 3 year quest to discover how he could attain this. While meditating, he received a revelation of what we now call Reiki.  He tested this "newly" found energy on family and friends, then decided he could not keep this discovery within his family as Japanese tradition dictated. He formulated a healing and teaching method taking the resulting process out to the public. In teaching others he found he could transfer the ability to access and use this energy to anyone. He moved to Tokyo and began healing and teaching there. Some of his students referred to this method of healing as the "Usui Reiki Method of Natural Healing" , or Usui Shiki Reiki Ryoho. In the West it has been taught  simply as "Reiki".

Reiki was brought to western culture, in 1938, by a Hawaiian woman, Mrs. Hawayo Takata. She learned Reiki from Usui's student Chujiro Hayashi, after having received Reiki treatments in his clinic. When she returned to Hawaii, she opened the first Reiki clinic outside Japan, teaching 22 (known) Reiki Masters in her lifetime.
